Cheap Weekend Flights from the UK: Keep the Time Off

A low fare is only useful if you can catch the flight and still enjoy the weekend. Start with your work hours, compare usable trips, then let the destination move.

What is in this guide

The short answer

To find cheap weekend flights from the UK, compare trips that fit your working hours: Friday evening or Saturday morning out, with a usable Sunday return. Keep the destination flexible, include airport transport and bags in the budget, and check the actual flight times before booking. A cheap date pair alone does not prove you can travel without taking leave.

What counts as a weekend you can actually take?

If you work Monday to Friday, your useful search window starts when you can leave work and ends when you need to be home. It does not start at midnight on Friday. Write those two limits down before opening a flight search. If you work shifts, use your own days off instead of assuming Saturday and Sunday are free.

For the outbound journey, work backwards from the airline’s required airport arrival time. Add the trip from work or home, a realistic buffer and any bag-drop requirement. An 18:30 flight can be impossible after a 17:30 finish even when the airport looks close on a map.

On the return, landing at 23:15 is not the same as being home at 23:15. Consider the time to leave the airport, the last usable train or bus, and the start of Monday. Check local times at both airports and any next-day arrival indicator.

Friday evening or Saturday morning? Compare both

Three short-break patterns to compare; these are planning options, not fare promises.
Trip patternUseful whenCost or time to check
Friday evening → Sunday eveningYou can reach the airport after workTwo hotel nights, late check-in and the Sunday journey home
Saturday morning → Sunday eveningYou want to avoid a rushed Friday departureOne hotel night, an early airport journey and less time away
Saturday → MondayMonday is genuinely availableAccommodation and any leave needed; it is not a no-leave option for a normal Monday shift

Compare several weekends with the same trip pattern. Changing the destination or weekend can reveal a better option without sacrificing the time you want away. A midweek bargain is irrelevant if you cannot take those days off. Our guide to searching flexible dates and destinations explains how to keep those limits while widening the search.

  1. Choose practical origins. Start with your nearest usable airport. Add another only if its transfer works at the required times.
  2. Choose two or three possible weekends. Search the full party and the same cabin each time so the prices are comparable.
  3. Keep destinations open at first. Make a shortlist of places you would enjoy for one or two nights. Check travel time from the arrival airport to where you want to stay.
  4. Compare departure and return times. Inspect both legs. For a short break, start with nonstop flights to protect your limited time away.
  5. Check nearby date pairs. Google Flights documents date comparisons and a price graph in its fare-search help. Use them to compare options that still fit your time off.
  6. Open the complete offer. Check bags, the fare conditions and the current total on the airline or seller’s page before paying. Compare accommodation at the same time.

Compare the whole weekend budget

A low fare can move the bill elsewhere. Use a simple total: return flights + required bags and seats + transport at both ends + accommodation. Then compare how much usable time each option buys. Include meals and activities separately in your overall spending limit.

Illustrative one-person comparison for the same two-night break. Invented prices show the arithmetic; these are not observed or bookable offers.
CostOption A: cheaper ticketOption B: easier airports
Return flight£60£100
Required baggage£30£0 additional
Return transport to UK airport£50£20
Return destination transfer£40£15
Two nights’ accommodation£160£160
Total before meals and activities£340£295

In this illustration, paying £40 more for the flight reduces the combined cost by £45. The point is to compare the costs you will actually pay. For a shared room or taxi, divide shared costs between travellers; do not multiply them as if each person needed a separate booking.

If you have a flight-only ceiling, keep it separate from your total break budget. Our guide to flights under £200 uses that distinction to stop a cheap ticket becoming an unaffordable holiday.

Which departure airports are worth adding?

There is no single cheapest UK departure airport for every weekend. Compare alternatives on the exact dates, including how you will reach them. A return to a different London airport might be workable with public transport but awkward if your car is parked at the outbound airport.

Start with the public fare previews for Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol or Edinburgh, or choose from the UK departure-airport list. These previews show recent checks when available. They are not all weekend trips and do not reserve the displayed price.

Set alerts for dates you can use

For a chosen destination and weekend, run the date-specific search and turn on price tracking. Google’s tracking instructions explain tracking for searched dates or Any dates. The latter looks broadly across the route; it should not be read as a promise to find Friday-to-Sunday trips.

Keep a short record of acceptable weekends, budget and latest booking date. When an alert arrives, check the flight times and the complete weekend cost again. Stop waiting if a usable trip meets your budget and you prefer the certainty of booking. No alert guarantees a cheaper future fare.

What the No holiday days collection checks

Blame the Fare’s member collection selects checked nonstop options leaving Friday from 18:00 or Saturday before noon, arriving back anytime Sunday before midnight, in local airport time. It checks a rotating selection of routes and can have no matching deals. You still need to check your work hours and airport journeys.

The broader Weekend Europe escapes collection includes two-to-four-night trips departing Thursday to Saturday and returning Sunday to Monday. Some of those trips need leave. Read the actual dates and times instead of treating every weekend label as interchangeable.

You can read the recent UK fare previews without an account. Full collections and saved-trip monitoring are membership features; AI trip search is coming soon. If you decide to join, the link below retains the No holiday days collection as your destination after signup.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this topic.

How do I find cheap weekend flights from the UK?

Start with the hours you can actually travel and choose a few weekends you could use. Compare Friday evening and Saturday morning departures with a usable Sunday return. Keep destinations open, then compare the full cost of flights, bags, accommodation and airport transfers. Check the current airline price before booking.

Can I go abroad for a weekend without taking annual leave?

It can work if the flights fit your working hours and airport journeys. A Friday evening departure does not automatically mean you can leave after work: allow for the journey to the airport and the airline's check-in requirements. On Sunday, calculate when you will reach home, not only when the plane lands.

Is Friday evening or Saturday morning cheaper?

There is no reliable winner for every route and weekend. Compare the same passenger count and baggage needs on both dates. A Saturday departure may remove a hotel night, but it also reduces time at the destination. Choose between complete trips you would enjoy rather than sorting only by the ticket price.

Can Google Flights alert me only about weekend trips?

You can track a chosen route for specific dates, so an exact Friday-to-Sunday search is one useful starting point. Google's Any dates tracking looks more broadly across the route. Treat those alerts as leads and inspect the departure, return and local flight times before assuming a result fits your weekend.

Which UK airport has the cheapest weekend flights?

The answer depends on the destination, dates and available fares. Compare your practical home airport with alternatives you can actually reach. Add the cost and time of both airport journeys, including parking or a taxi if public transport will not work. The lowest airfare from a distant airport may not be the cheapest trip.

What does Blame the Fare's No holiday days collection include?

It selects checked nonstop return options leaving Friday from 18:00 or Saturday before noon, and arriving back anytime Sunday before midnight, using local airport times. Coverage is a rotating selection, so it may have no match. The full collection requires membership. The timing label does not know your working hours or journey home.
