Choose the site for the search you need

The useful question is not “Which brand is best?” It is “Which job am I trying to finish?” A fixed route, a flexible weekend, an open destination and a background price alert are four different jobs. A tool can be excellent at one and awkward at another.

Write down the trip you would actually take before opening a search site: usable airports, travel dates, party size, cabin, baggage, acceptable stops and latest arrival time. If one result changes those constraints, it is not a cheaper version of the same trip.

Search engines, sellers and alert services are different

Google Flights, Skyscanner and KAYAK are comparison tools. Hopper also acts as a travel agency for bookings it sells. Going and Jack’s Flight Club curate deals and send alerts. An airline sells its own flights. These categories overlap, but they do not create the same contract after purchase. Always note the business named on the checkout page and confirmation.

Google Flights for a known route

Google Flights is a practical first search when you know the origin and destination. Its calendar and price graph make nearby dates easy to compare, while filters keep stops, cabin and airline preferences in the result. Google’s own search and booking guidance says that not all airlines or available flights are included, so a useful result still deserves a final cross-check.

Google also lets signed-in users track a route, searched dates or a specific flight. Its “Any dates” option watches one route and emails when the minimum price drops significantly over a month. It does not turn the alert into an open-destination newsletter.

Skyscanner for flexible dates and destinations

Skyscanner’s Explore Everywhere begins with your departure point and lets the destination stay open. You can choose exact dates, a month or the cheapest month, then filter the destination list. That makes it useful when the trip budget matters more than a particular place.

Skyscanner says its month and Everywhere prices are estimates based on prices users found in the previous eight days. Use them to choose a promising destination or period, then rerun the exact trip. For fixed dates, its free Price Alerts can email you when the fare changes.

KAYAK for alerts and short-term forecasts

KAYAK compares travel providers and sends the user to the chosen seller. Its Price Alerts guidance says users can create multiple alerts with no published limit. Most alerts refresh daily, with optional real-time notifications when KAYAK sees a significant price change.

KAYAK’s Price Forecast predicts whether a round-trip route is likely to rise or fall over the next seven days. It appears only when the route has enough data, includes a confidence level and is not a guarantee. Treat “buy now” or “wait” as context, not as a promise about tomorrow’s fare.

Hopper for app-based predictions and booking

Hopper is not simply another metasearch page. Hopper describes an app that predicts prices, sends buy-or-wait notifications and lets users book. Its help centre also says Price Prediction, Price Freeze and its other travel products remain app-only, even where web flight booking is available to selected U.S. travellers.

That makes Hopper a fit for someone happy to plan and transact in an app. It also means the booking relationship differs from a search engine that redirects you. Review the fare details, fees, currency and support route before paying.

Going and Jack's Flight Club for deal discovery

A curated service solves a different problem: “Show me unusually useful fares from airports I can reach.” Going’s official plan page lists a free Limited tier, Premium at $49 per year and Elite at $199 per year. Premium focuses on economy deals; Elite adds higher cabins. Jack’s Flight Club currently lists UK Standby as free, Takeoff at £48 per year and First Class at £149 per year.

Compare the complete trip before paying

Open the airline’s own page before buying, even if an agency is cheaper. Direct booking is not automatically cheapest or most flexible, but it gives you a like-for-like reference and makes the identity of the seller clear.

Use monitoring when you are not ready to book

3. Cross-check one candidate. Compare the same itinerary on another search tool and the airline’s site.
4. Choose the seller deliberately. Check the full total, fare conditions and who will manage the ticket.
5. Track only if waiting is acceptable. Save the correct route or trip and work to your own booking deadline.
