The short answer
The best time to book flights to the USA from the UK is usually two to four months before departure, and earlier for July, August and Christmas. Start watching around five months out. January to March and November, outside half-term, tend to be the cheapest months. No study can name one perfect booking day, so set a target fare and book when it appears.

How far ahead to book flights to the USA from the UK
For a transatlantic economy return from the UK, think in months rather than weeks. Start looking about five months out, decide on a target fare, and expect to book somewhere between two and four months before departure. For school-holiday dates, buy at the start of that range or before it. Waiting for a late drop on peak dates rarely pays.
This is a starting point, not a rule. Transatlantic fares are set flight by flight by airline revenue systems. A Tuesday in February from Heathrow and a Saturday in August from Manchester behave like different products. Our general guide to the best time to book flights explains why booking windows are averages across thousands of routes, not a date on which a particular flight goes on sale.
Booking the moment a schedule opens is not automatically cheaper either; the earliest fares are not always the lowest. Our guide to how far in advance you can book flights covers when schedules open.
What the booking-window studies actually measure
The most useful public figures come from Google. Its October 2026 holiday-travel post uses five years of aggregated Google Flights data. For international trips, it says the lowest prices hit 89 days before departure on average, with a low-price range of 50 to 133 days. For Europe, the low point is 90 days and the range starts at 49 days. Google adds that the price fall within the international range is small, so it advises booking early rather than waiting.
The catch for British travellers is that Google’s analysis covers U.S. departures. A New York-to-London return and a London-to-New York return share the same aircraft but sell into different markets, holidays and currencies. Treat Google’s numbers as a sensible guide to transatlantic timing, not a measurement of the UK point of sale.
KAYAK publishes route pages from UK searches, and they show how much “best time” advice depends on method. On 17 October 2026 its London–New York page said to book “around 3 weeks before departure” to beat last-minute prices, while the same page said 26 weeks for the absolute cheapest price. Its London–Orlando page said eight weeks; London–Los Angeles said 26 weeks. These figures are averages over the previous 12 months and change as the data rolls forward.
There is no magic booking day
Google’s 2026 post found that booking on a Wednesday saved only about 1.4% against Sunday, a gap it called negligible. The day you fly, the month and the route matter far more than the weekday you press “buy”.
Cheapest months to fly from the UK to the USA
Seasonality moves the price far more than booking timing does. KAYAK’s UK route pages, checked on 17 October 2026, put the cheapest month at February for London–New York (an average of £402 return) and London–Los Angeles (£436), and January for London–Orlando (£454). Those are KAYAK’s 12-month averages, not Blame the Fare observations, and they will drift.
| Route | Cheapest month (average return) | Most expensive months (average return) |
|---|---|---|
| London–New York | February (£402) | July (£640), June (£612) |
| London–Orlando | January (£454) | August (£675), December (£662) |
| London–Los Angeles | February (£436) | December (£573), June (£548) |
The pattern is consistent: late winter is cheapest, while early summer and December are the most expensive. November, before the Christmas getaway, is worth checking too; our own deal history below leans heavily towards November and December departures. For the wider seasonal picture, see the cheapest time of year to fly.
Summer, Christmas and school holidays
If you are tied to school holidays, booking early beats almost any trick. Late July and August are when British families travel. Orlando is the clearest example: KAYAK’s average for August was almost half as much again as January. Those fares rarely need to be discounted, because airlines know months in advance that the seats will sell.
Christmas is similar. Google’s U.S. data puts the Christmas low point at 56 days out, within a range of 33 to 67 days. Treat that as the latest point to wait, not a target. From the UK, half-term in February and Easter can also push Florida and New York fares up for specific weeks.
One honest exception: our deal feed did surface some festive dates. Between 19 September and 17 October 2026, Blame the Fare’s deal scanner logged Heathrow–Atlanta one-stop returns departing between 2 and 24 December from £441, and an Edinburgh–Los Angeles return departing on 26 December at £341. That shows December deals exist. It does not show that waiting is a good strategy for a family locked into specific dates.
What our UK-to-US deal history shows
Blame the Fare’s deal scanner looks for fares that sit below the price a provider describes as typical for that route. Between 19 September and 17 October 2026 it logged 83 sightings of US deals from UK airports across 21 origin–destination pairs and 16 US airports. A fare seen on several days counts once per day. Heathrow accounted for 60 sightings, Liverpool 19, Edinburgh 3 and Birmingham 1.
| Route | Sightings | Lowest / median | Departures seen | Median lead | Airlines (stops) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birmingham–Los Angeles | 1 | £261 | 8 Nov 2026 | 24 days | Aer Lingus (1) |
| Heathrow–Washington Dulles | 6 | £300 / £338 | 28 Oct 2026–19 Jan 2027 | 68 days | Aer Lingus, Icelandair, TAP (1) |
| Heathrow–Los Angeles | 2 | £304 / £354 | 9–23 Nov 2026 | 32 days | Aer Lingus, TAP (1) |
| Edinburgh–Los Angeles | 2 | £316 / £329 | 26 Dec 2026–13 Mar 2027 | 110 days | Aer Lingus (1) |
| Heathrow–Orlando | 4 | £317 / £317 | 11–18 Jan 2027 | 114 days | Icelandair (1) |
| Edinburgh–Boston | 1 | £323 | 5 Dec 2026 | 52 days | Aer Lingus (1) |
| Liverpool–Boston | 1 | £328 | 17 Jan 2027 | 93 days | Aer Lingus (1) |
| Heathrow–Seattle | 16 | £334 / £348 | 11 Nov 2026–31 Mar 2027 | 76 days | Icelandair (1) |
| Liverpool–Los Angeles | 10 | £335 / £551 | 28 Oct–4 Dec 2026 | 51 days | Aer Lingus, British Airways (1–2) |
| Heathrow–Atlanta | 9 | £441 / £441 | 2–24 Dec 2026 | 61 days | Delta (1) |
Three things stand out. First, every US deal in this history had at least one stop: none was nonstop. Second, departures clustered between October and March. December had 32 sightings and November 19, while February had none and nothing departed between May and September. Third, the gap between sighting and departure ranged from 11 to 180 days. Weighted by sightings, the route medians centre on about 62 days, or roughly two months.
Do not read that as “book 62 days out”. This is four weeks of autumn deal data, not a full price history. It shows what cheap fares appeared and how far ahead, not when fares were lowest. Many routes rest on one or two sightings. The useful lesson is narrower: sub-£350 returns to major US cities did appear, mostly one to four months ahead and mostly with a connection.
Route notes: LAX, Seattle, Orlando, Washington and Boston
Los Angeles appeared from four UK airports, more than any other US destination. The £261 Birmingham return was a single sighting 24 days before an 8 November departure. Liverpool–Los Angeles was seen ten times, but its median was £551, so the cheapest one was an outlier. In the feed on 17 October 2026, Edinburgh–Los Angeles for 13–20 March 2027 was £316 with Aer Lingus and one stop, against a provider typical price of £637.
Seattle was the most consistent: 16 sightings from Heathrow between £334 and £351, all Icelandair with one stop, for departures from November to the end of March. A stable price across many dates is more useful for planning than one outlier.
Orlando appeared only from Heathrow: four sightings at £317 to £327 on Icelandair for mid-January departures, about 16 weeks ahead. Nothing in this history covers Florida in the school summer holidays, so it says nothing about August.
Washington Dulles from Heathrow was seen six times from £300, on Aer Lingus, Icelandair and TAP. In the feed on 17 October 2026, 19–25 November was £370 on TAP with one stop. Boston appeared twice from regional airports: Edinburgh at £323 for early December and Liverpool at £328 for mid-January, both on Aer Lingus.
Heathrow is the deepest market, so it dominates. You can see what is currently showing on the Heathrow, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Birmingham airport pages.
Nonstop or one-stop from regional UK airports
Outside London, nonstop choice is limited. Edinburgh Airport’s destination list, checked in October 2026, shows US services to New York (American, Delta, JetBlue and United), Boston (Delta and JetBlue), Atlanta (Delta), Chicago (United), Washington (United), Philadelphia (American) and Orlando (Virgin Atlantic). Some of these are seasonal, so check the date you need. Manchester Airport said in May 2026 that Virgin Atlantic flies from there to Orlando, Atlanta, New York and Las Vegas.
From other regional airports, most US trips involve a connection. A connection through Dublin can suit travellers flying from regional UK airports: U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists Dublin and Shannon as preclearance airports, so travellers clear US checks in Ireland and bypass them on arrival. Many of the Aer Lingus deals in our history started from Birmingham, Edinburgh and Liverpool, although the data does not record which airport each trip connected through.
Price is only part of the decision. Google’s 2026 data found nonstop tickets cost about 20% more than connecting ones on average. Our nonstop vs connecting flights guide explains when that saving is real. A connection on one ticket protects you if the first flight runs late. Two separate tickets do not; see the risks of separate tickets and how long a layover should be.
Do not forget the drive or train. A one-stop fare from Manchester or Glasgow can beat a slightly cheaper Heathrow fare once a hotel, rail ticket or parking is added. Compare the whole journey from your front door.
ESTA: the cost to add before you compare fares
British citizens visiting under the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before travel, unless they hold a visa. GOV.UK’s USA entry page says you must have an ESTA or a visa to enter or transit through the US, and that your passport must be valid for the length of your stay.
The official ESTA site, checked on 17 October 2026, lists the fee as US$40.62 per application. That is a US$10.62 processing charge, plus US$30 once the application is approved (a US$17 travel promotion fee and a US$13 General Fund fee). The fee has changed several times since 2025, so check the official figure on the day you apply. An approved ESTA lasts two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
CBP recommends applying when you book. Apply only through the official site linked from GOV.UK. Check whether your current ESTA will still be valid on the return date, especially if your passport is due for renewal.
A booking plan for a UK-to-US trip
- Fix the season first. If you can, fly January to March or November, avoiding half-term weeks. That choice saves more than any booking tactic.
- Start watching about five months out. Search your exact dates and a few alternatives either side, then note the typical return fare.
- Set a target and a deadline. Pick a price you would happily pay and the latest date you will wait to, roughly eight weeks before an off-peak trip or three to four months before summer.
- Price nonstop and one-stop side by side. Include airport transport, bags and the connection risk, not just the headline fare.
- Book when the target appears. Buy from the airline or agent, then apply for or check your ESTA straight away.
If the fare falls after you book, what you can do depends on the fare rules, so read them before paying. Our guide to what to do when a flight price drops after booking covers the options.
Watch one exact trip instead of guessing the date
Anyone can preview current deals or browse the UK departure airports. Members of The Departures Club get the full feed and can create an exact-trip Watch: one origin, destination, outbound date, return date and maximum return fare, checked hourly. Free tools such as Google Flights price tracking do a similar job for one route, so compare before paying.
The Departures Club is priced in U.S. dollars at $9 per month or $79 per year. Where available, the founding annual offer is $49 for the first year and renews at $79 per year. Eligible new annual members get a 7-day trial with a card required. Check current prices and renewal terms. Blame the Fare does not sell tickets or hold fares; you book with the airline or agent.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about this topic.
How far in advance should I book flights to the USA from the UK?
Start watching about five months before departure and aim to book two to four months ahead. Google's 2026 analysis of U.S. departures found international fares lowest around 89 days out, within a range of 50 to 133 days. For July, August and Christmas, book at the early end, because those dates rarely need discounting to sell.
What is the cheapest month to fly from the UK to the USA?
Late winter is usually cheapest. KAYAK's UK route pages, read on 17 October 2026, named February for London to New York and Los Angeles, and January for London to Orlando. June, July, August and December were the most expensive months on those pages. November, before the Christmas rush, is also worth comparing if your dates are flexible.
Is it cheaper to book flights to America last minute?
Occasionally, but it is a gamble. Blame the Fare's deal scanner did log a Birmingham to Los Angeles return at £261 just 24 days before departure, but it was a single sighting. Google's data shows international fares generally lowest two to four months out. For fixed dates, especially school holidays, waiting for a late drop usually costs more.
When should I book flights to Orlando for the summer holidays?
Book early, ideally five or more months before an August trip. KAYAK's London to Orlando page showed August as the most expensive month, averaging £675 against £454 in January, when read on 17 October 2026. Summer school-holiday demand is predictable, so airlines have little reason to discount. Set a target fare and book once it appears.
Are there direct flights to the USA from regional UK airports?
Some. Edinburgh Airport lists US routes to New York, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia and Orlando, several of them seasonal. Manchester Airport said in May 2026 that Virgin Atlantic flies to Orlando, Atlanta, New York and Las Vegas. From most other regional airports, a US trip means connecting through London, Dublin or another European hub.
Is a one-stop flight to the USA worth it to save money?
It can be. Google's 2026 data found nonstop tickets cost about 20% more than connecting ones on average, and every UK-to-US deal our scanner logged had at least one stop. Keep the whole trip on one ticket so a late first flight is protected, allow a realistic layover and include extra travel time and costs.
How much does an ESTA cost in 2026?
The official ESTA site listed US$40.62 per application when checked on 17 October 2026. That is a US$10.62 processing charge plus US$30 added once approved, made up of a US$17 travel promotion fee and a US$13 General Fund fee. The amount has changed several times since 2025, so confirm it when you apply.
When should I apply for an ESTA?
CBP recommends applying when you book your travel, and you must have an approved ESTA or a visa before you travel. An approved ESTA lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If yours is close to expiry, or you have renewed your passport, check that it will still be valid for the trip.
What does Blame the Fare's UK-to-US deal data show?
Between 19 September and 17 October 2026, the deal scanner logged 83 US deal sightings across 21 routes from Heathrow, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Departures ran from October to April, sightings were 11 to 180 days ahead, and every fare had a stop. It is a short snapshot of below-typical fares, not proof of the cheapest booking date.
Does the day of the week I book make flights to the USA cheaper?
Barely. Google's 2026 holiday analysis found booking on a Wednesday saved only about 1.4% compared with Sunday, a difference it called negligible. The month you travel, the day you fly out and whether you accept a connection have much more effect. Spend your effort on flexible dates and airports rather than on timing the purchase.
