Best Time to Book Flights to Spain from the UK

Peak school-holiday trips reward booking when schedules load. Flexible off-peak trips reward watching from about three months out. Which island group you pick changes the answer.

What is in this guide

The short answer

The best time to book flights to Spain from the UK depends on your dates. For school-holiday trips, price and book soon after the airlines load the season; summer 2027 went on sale between October 2025 and October 2026. For flexible off-peak trips, watch from about three months out: mainland and Canaries deals in our feed appeared a median of seven to eight weeks ahead.

  • £24

  • 18.2m

Visits to Spain by GB residents in 2024 (ONS estimate)

Spain is the default foreign trip for British travellers. The ONS estimates Great Britain residents made 18.2 million visits there in 2024, more than to France and Italy combined. That volume is why Spain fares behave differently from a long-haul route: there are dozens of daily flights from almost every UK airport, low-cost carriers compete hard, and the cheapest seats can turn up at short notice as well as a year out.

This guide is the Spain-specific companion to our general guide to the best time to book flights, which covers the large airfare studies. Here the focus is narrower: UK departures, Spanish airports, British school holidays and what Blame the Fare’s deal scanner recorded for Spain over the four weeks to 17 October 2026.

The short answer for Spain

There is no single booking day that beats every other for Spain. What moves the price far more is when you travel. A family flying to Palma in the first week of August is competing with millions of other families who have exactly the same dates. A couple who can fly to Málaga on a Tuesday in late November is competing with almost nobody.

So split the decision in two. If your dates are fixed by school holidays, the risk is waiting too long: the cheapest fare buckets on peak flights sell first and rarely come back. If your dates are flexible, the risk is booking too early at a fare that a sale or a deal will beat later. Our deal data covers the second case well and the first case hardly at all, and the sections below say which is which.

How to read the prices in this guide

Every fare quoted below is a return economy price for one adult in GBP, as Blame the Fare’s deal scanner found it between 19 September and 17 October 2026. They are snapshots of fares flagged as below a provider’s typical price, not a full price history, and none of them is guaranteed or still bookable. Low-cost fares usually include only a small under-seat bag.

When Spain flights go on sale

The earliest possible booking date is set by the airline’s schedule release, and the three big UK carriers to Spain release at very different points.

  • Jet2 put its summer 2027 flights and holidays on sale in mid-October 2025, from all 13 of its UK bases. That is around 21 months before the peak of the season it covers, and it was described as the brand’s earliest summer launch.
  • easyJet opened its summer 2027 Big Seat Release on 28 July 2026, covering travel from 14 June to 26 September 2027: nearly 14 million UK seats with one-way fares advertised from £22.99. Spain alone gets more than 7.5 million easyJet seats for summer 2027 across its network.
  • Ryanair put its first 29 new summer 2027 routes on sale in early October 2026, including Newcastle to Reus and Norwich to Málaga, and said more would follow. Its wider summer 2027 schedule, planned at over 2,500 routes, loads in stages.

For a peak summer trip, the first week after a schedule loads is the moment to at least price the trip, because every fare bucket is still open. It is not a guarantee that release-day fares are the lowest you will see: airlines also run seat sales later. But for the last week of July or the August bank holiday, betting on a later sale has usually been the riskier side of the trade. Our explainer on how far in advance you can book flights covers the standard booking horizons in more detail.

School holidays set the price floor

In England, term dates are set locally, so the GOV.UK term-dates page sends you to your council. The table below uses Leeds City Council for an English example and the City of Edinburgh Council for Scotland. Academies and free schools can set their own dates, so check yours.

May 2027Mon 31 May to Fri 4 JuneNo half-term week; closed 3 to 4 May and 24 May
Summer 2027From Fri 23 JulyTerm ends Tue 29 June

Two details are worth noticing. First, Easter 2027 falls early, on 28 March, but many schools take their two-week break afterwards, from 5 April. Easter weekend flights and Easter school holiday flights are therefore different trips with different demand, and the bank holiday weekend can be busy even when schools are still open. Our 2027 bank holiday guide has the full list.

Second, Scotland breaks up more than three weeks before England. Edinburgh schools finish on 29 June 2027, while the Leeds summer holiday starts on 23 July. A Glasgow or Edinburgh family flying to Spain in early July is on Scotland’s peak dates but outside England’s, and the reverse applies in late August, after Scottish schools have gone back. If you live near the border or can drive to Newcastle, comparing both sides is worth a search.

A small sign of how strongly school holidays shape fares: none of the 54 Spanish deals in our feed on 17 October 2026 departed during 26 to 30 October, the Leeds half-term week. The October deals were all for 18 to 21 October, after Edinburgh’s break had ended; the rest were for late November onwards.

Which months are cheaper to fly to Spain

For flexible travellers, the cheaper months to fly to Spain are the shoulder and winter weeks that sit between school holidays: most of November, the first half of December, January after the first week, early March and the weeks around but not inside Easter and May half-term. The general pattern across all destinations is covered in our guide to the cheapest time of year to fly.

Our deal data shows that pattern clearly for late autumn. Of the 1,262 Spain observations logged between 19 September and 17 October 2026, 467 were for October departures, 218 for November and 455 for December. December was busy because of cheap returns for early and mid-December. Of the 65 Spain routes with a logged departure in December or later, 54 had their last logged departure on or before 18 December, the last school day before Christmas in both Leeds and Edinburgh.

The deal history thins out sharply after January, with only 72 January observations and fewer than 20 for February to April combined. That is mostly a coverage effect: the scanner surfaces flagged deals for the next few months far more than a year ahead. It is not evidence that spring fares to Spain are expensive.

Mainland, Balearics and Canaries run on different clocks

Spain is three markets for a UK traveller, and each has its own season. Booking as if they were one is the most common mistake.

The Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura) are the year-round sun option, so winter is a busy season rather than a quiet one. In our data, Canaries deals clustered in December, with 265 of 408 observations, and they were logged a median of about 56 days before departure. In other words, flagged December Canaries fares were turning up in October, which is when to start looking for pre-Christmas winter sun. Our Canary Islands booking guide covers the four islands and the school-holiday peaks; our cheap warm places to fly in winter guide covers alternatives if the Canaries look full.

The Balearics (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca) are summer islands. The deals the scanner logged were heavily weighted to the end of the season: 313 of 470 Balearic observations were for October departures, and the typical Balearic route had a median lead of only about 10 days. That is what late-season seat clearance looks like. By December, cheap low-cost returns to Menorca had gone from the data; every December and January Menorca deal was from Edinburgh, priced from £114, and the one in the feed on 17 October was a one-stop Vueling return at £122.

Mainland Spain (Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao) is the most even across the year, because city breaks and second-home traffic do not depend only on beach weather. Mainland deals were spread across October (107 observations), November (65) and December (131), with a median lead of about 54 days across routes.

What our Spain deal history shows

Spain deals logged by Blame the Fare's deal scanner from 19 September to 17 October 2026, by region. Return economy, one adult, GBP. Route medians and lead times are medians of per-route figures. Snapshot of deal observations only; not bookable or guaranteed.
RegionUK–Spain routesObservationsLowest returnTypical route medianTypical lead time
Mainland33384£24 (Luton–Barcelona)£4154 days
Balearics34470£27 (Luton–Palma)£56.5010.5 days
Canary Islands36408£26 (Bristol–Lanzarote)£39.5056.5 days

Across all 103 UK–Spain routes in the period, the scanner logged deals from 13 UK airports to 18 Spanish airports. Spain made up 1,262 of the 6,632 deal observations for every destination, roughly one in five. Ryanair appeared on routes accounting for 656 Spain observations and easyJet on 515, followed by Jet2, Vueling and British Airways.

Lead times are where this data is most useful. For mainland and Canaries trips in November and December, flagged fares typically appeared seven to eight weeks ahead. For the Balearics at the end of the season, they appeared days ahead. Neither figure proves that is when prices bottom out on every route, because the scanner only logs fares it flags as deals. It does show that waiting for a late Spain deal is a realistic strategy only if your dates and destination can move.

Full-service fares look different. London City to Madrid on British Airways had a median of £139 across 26 observations, and London City to Málaga £159. As an illustrative comparison, if you put a £35 Ryanair return beside a £140 BA return, include bags and seats before deciding; our guide to what counts as a good price for a flight explains how to benchmark.

Spain fares in the feed on 17 October 2026

On 17 October 2026, 54 of the 232 UK deals in Blame the Fare’s public deal feed were to Spain. The cheapest were Bristol to Lanzarote, 11 to 16 December, at £26 against a provider typical price of £107; Luton to Tenerife, 3 to 10 December, at £27; Luton to Barcelona, 28 to 30 November, at £28; and Newcastle to Málaga, 28 November to 9 December, at £29.

Further north, Edinburgh to Gran Canaria for 15 to 26 December was in the feed at £39 against a typical £179, and Glasgow to Alicante for 17 to 24 December at £38 against £153. Both depart just before Scottish schools break up. Ibiza and Menorca deals were still present, mostly for 18 to 21 October departures at £45 to £76. Later Balearic deals were sparser: Gatwick to Menorca, 25 to 28 November, at £37, and Birmingham to Palma, 22 to 27 November, at £42.

These are snapshots. Fares this low often disappear within hours or days, and the feed changes overnight. You can see what is live now on the deal feed.

Which UK airports to check for Spain

Spain is served from nearly every UK airport, so the airport you pick can matter more than the day you book. In this period the scanner logged Spain deals from all 13 airports we cover. A few patterns:

  • Luton produced the lowest London-area fares, including £24 to Barcelona and £27 to Palma and Tenerife. Stansted had £30 lows to Barcelona, Valencia, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria.
  • Bristol and Newcastle had Canaries medians of £30 to £36 on several routes.
  • Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham had cheap end-of-season Balearic deals, such as Manchester to Ibiza with a route median of £31.
  • Edinburgh and Glasgow paid more for the Balearics in this sample (Glasgow to Ibiza had a £107 median) but were competitive to the Canaries and mainland.
  • Belfast had steady Málaga and Alicante deals, with medians of £43 and £37.

A booking plan for your Spain trip

Here is the order to work through for a Spain trip from the UK.

  1. Decide whether your dates are fixed. School holiday, wedding and bank holiday trips are fixed. Everything else is flexible, even if it does not feel like it.
  2. For fixed peak dates, price the trip when the schedule loads. Check Jet2, easyJet and Ryanair directly once they publish your season, and book when the full trip cost (flights, bags, seats) is one you are happy to pay.
  3. Pick the right island group for the month. Canaries for winter sun, Balearics from late spring to October, mainland cities any time.
  4. Compare two or three UK airports. Route medians for the same island varied hugely by airport: Ibiza was £31 from Manchester and £107 from Glasgow.
  5. For flexible off-peak trips, start watching about three months out. Set a Google Flights tracker on Any dates for the route, or an exact-trip alert, and decide on a maximum fare in advance.
  6. Avoid the first and last days of school holidays. Flying a day or two outside them, where your school allows, is often the single biggest saving.
  7. Book when the fare hits your number. Low Spain fares rarely last. Google describes its tracking as email updates when a price changes significantly; no tracker or Watch holds a fare for you.

If midweek travel is an option, our guide to the cheapest days to fly explains why departure day often matters more than booking day.

What this data cannot tell you

Blame the Fare’s deal scanner logs fares that a provider prices below its own typical level. That makes the history a good record of which Spain deals appeared, from which airports and how far ahead. It does not record every fare, so it cannot show the average price of a route over time or prove the single cheapest week to book.

The sample is also short: four weeks in autumn 2026. It tells you a lot about booking for late autumn and December, and almost nothing about booking for August 2027. Some routes have only a handful of observations (Luton to Bilbao had one, at £41), so treat single figures as examples rather than benchmarks. Prices are for one adult and usually exclude hold bags. The Departures Club does not sell tickets; you always book with the airline or an agent.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about this topic.

What is the best time to book flights to Spain from the UK?

It depends on your dates. For school holidays and bank holiday weekends, price the trip as soon as the airline loads that season and book when the total is acceptable, because the cheapest fare buckets on peak flights sell first. For flexible off-peak trips, start watching about three months ahead. Mainland and Canaries deals in our autumn 2026 data typically appeared seven to eight weeks before departure.

How far in advance should I book flights to Spain?

For peak summer, Easter and half-term trips, book months ahead, often as soon as the schedule is released. For off-peak trips, two to three months ahead is a sensible window to watch. Blame the Fare's deal scanner logged mainland Spain deals a median of 54 days before departure and Canaries deals 56.5 days before, between 19 September and 17 October 2026.

When do summer 2027 flights to Spain go on sale?

Most already have. Jet2 put its summer 2027 flights and holidays on sale in mid-October 2025 from all 13 UK bases. easyJet released nearly 14 million summer 2027 seats on 28 July 2026 for travel from 14 June to 26 September 2027. Ryanair began putting new summer 2027 routes on sale in October 2026 and said more would follow.

What is the cheapest month to fly to Spain from the UK?

For the mainland and the Balearics, the cheaper months are usually the quieter ones outside school holidays: November, early December, January after the first week and early March. The Canaries are different because winter is their high season. In our data, 54 of 65 Spain routes with December deals had no logged departure after 18 December, the last day of term in Leeds and Edinburgh.

Is it cheaper to fly to the Canaries or the Balearics in winter?

In winter the Canaries usually have far more flights and more low fares. Between 19 September and 17 October 2026, our scanner logged 265 December Canaries deals but only 59 December Balearic deals. December Balearic deals came from fewer UK airports and cost more: Palma's December median was £110, against £47 for October departures.

Are flights to Spain cheaper if I book last minute?

Sometimes, but only if you are flexible. End-of-season Balearic deals in our data appeared a median of about 10 days before departure, and some October Ibiza and Menorca returns were under £80. For school holidays, last-minute booking is a poor bet because demand is high and the cheapest seats tend to sell early. Treat late deals as a bonus, not a plan.

Which UK airport is cheapest for flights to Spain?

There is no single cheapest airport. In our deal data, Luton had the lowest London-area returns, including £24 to Barcelona, while Stansted, Bristol, Liverpool and Newcastle produced many returns around £30. Scottish airports were competitive for the Canaries but dearer for the Balearics. Comparing two or three airports you can reach often saves more than changing booking date.

When are the 2026/27 school holidays in England?

Term dates in England are set locally, so check your council or academy. Leeds, for example, has half-term from 26 to 30 October 2026, Christmas from 21 December to 1 January, February half-term from 15 to 19 February 2027, Easter from 5 to 16 April 2027, May half-term from 31 May to 4 June and summer from 23 July 2027.

Does it matter what day of the week I fly to Spain?

It can matter more than the day you book. Low-cost fares are set flight by flight, so two departures a day apart on the same route can be priced very differently. Search a week or month view rather than one date, compare return days as well as outbound days, and check the full cost with bags before you decide which flights to book.

Can Blame the Fare tell me when Spain fares will drop?

No. Our deal scanner logs fares that a provider flags as below its typical price, so it shows which Spain deals appeared, from which airports and how far ahead. It cannot predict future prices or guarantee that a fare will fall. A Watch checks one exact trip every hour against your maximum fare, and you always book with the airline or an agent.
