The short answer
Belfast International vs Belfast City comes down to where you are going. For cheap sun, ski and European city breaks, start at Belfast International (BFS), home to easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 leisure flights. For London and other Great Britain routes, compare George Best Belfast City (BHD) too: it is three miles from the centre and the bus ride is shorter.

Belfast International vs Belfast City: the quick verdict
If you live in or near Belfast and want the cheapest way out, Belfast International is usually the first airport to search. It is the bigger airport by a distance: the Civil Aviation Authority recorded 6.74 million terminal passengers there in the twelve months to May 2026, against 2.43 million at Belfast City. More of those seats are low-cost holiday flights to Spain, the Canaries, Portugal and further afield.
Belfast City wins on convenience. It sits about three miles from the city centre, so a 7am flight is far less painful if you live in east Belfast or North Down. Its network leans towards Great Britain: London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol and smaller regional airports, plus KLM to Amsterdam.
So the honest answer to “which Belfast airport is cheaper?” is: for a beach holiday or a European city break, BFS almost always has more options and so more chances of a low fare. For a weekend in London or Manchester, search both and let the total cost decide. For long-haul, or a route neither airport serves, add Dublin to the list.
| Belfast International | George Best Belfast City | |
|---|---|---|
| Airport code | BFS | BHD |
| Location | Aldergrove, roughly a 30-minute drive from the centre | About three miles from the centre, beside the harbour |
| Passengers (12 months to May 2026) | 6,744,000 | 2,430,000 |
| Main airlines | easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 | easyJet, Aer Lingus Regional, British Airways, KLM |
| Strongest for | Sun, ski and European city breaks | Great Britain, London and Amsterdam connections |

BFS, BHD and the booking mix-up to avoid
Two airports in one small city means mix-ups. Belfast International is BFS. George Best Belfast City is BHD. Some booking screens just say “Belfast”, and Belfast International is often called “Belfast Airport” on its own, which does not help.
The mistake is expensive in practice rather than on paper. Book an outbound from BHD and a return into BFS and you could land at night on the wrong side of the city from your car. A friend collecting you might drive to the wrong terminal. Read the three-letter code on the search result, on the airline’s checkout page and on the confirmation email.
Mixing airports can still be a good idea. Flying out of Belfast City on a Friday evening and back into Belfast International on Sunday is fine if you are using buses or a taxi. Just make it a deliberate choice. Our guide to searching multiple airports in Google Flights shows how to put both codes in one search.
Who flies from each Belfast airport
Belfast International. easyJet flies the widest spread of routes in our BFS data, from domestic hops to winter sun. Ryanair said in July 2026 that it has two aircraft based at the airport and operated 15 routes that summer, naming Alicante, Lanzarote, Malta, Kraków, Milan and Porto. Jet2 runs flights and package holidays from BFS, and Jet2holidays lists more than 24 destinations there, including Menorca, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Crete. Visit Belfast also lists TUI at the airport.
Belfast City. Visit Belfast lists Aer Lingus Regional, British Airways, KLM and easyJet at George Best Belfast City. easyJet flies from there to Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester, and is adding London Southend three times a week from 25 October 2026. Aer Lingus Regional and British Airways add more domestic choice; check their own sites for the current Belfast City timetable, because routes change between seasons.
Airline mix is the main reason fares differ. Ryanair and Jet2 are not on Visit Belfast’s list of Belfast City airlines, so if you want a Ryanair fare to Alicante or a Jet2 package to Lanzarote, BFS is where they are. If a low headline fare depends on a budget airline, check what you will pay for bags first: our guide to budget airlines covers the trade-offs.
What Blame the Fare's BFS deal data shows
What this data can and cannot tell you
Blame the Fare’s deal scanner covers Belfast International only. It does not scan Belfast City or Dublin. The figures below are deal observations: fares the scanner flagged as below the typical price a provider showed for that route. They are snapshots, not a full price history, and not bookable or guaranteed prices.
Between 19 September and 17 October 2026, the scanner logged 504 BFS deal observations across 39 destinations. Every one was a nonstop return in economy for one adult. easyJet appeared on 29 of those 39 routes, Ryanair on eight and Jet2 on seven. Fifteen routes had at least one fare under £50 return.
| Destination | Deals logged | Lowest | Median | Median lead days | Airlines seen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris Beauvais | 28 | £30 | £34 | 8 | Ryanair |
| Lanzarote | 22 | £31 | £45 | 63 | easyJet, Ryanair |
| Alicante | 12 | £34 | £37 | 49 | Ryanair |
| Málaga | 23 | £35 | £43 | 58 | Ryanair |
| Kraków | 20 | £41 | £51 | 12 | Not recorded |
| Palma | 26 | £44 | £66 | 16 | easyJet, Ryanair |
| Marrakesh | 21 | £49 | £57 | 69 | easyJet |
| Geneva | 23 | £59 | £62 | 84 | easyJet |
| Prague | 21 | £61 | £76 | 105 | easyJet |
| Tenerife | 15 | £74 | £84 | 62 | easyJet |
| Ibiza | 28 | £76 | £76 | 13 | easyJet, Jet2 |
| Sharm El-Sheikh | 23 | £109 | £126 | 69 | easyJet |
| Hurghada | 28 | £144 | £173 | 61 | easyJet |
A few patterns stand out. Short Ryanair hops such as Paris Beauvais kept appearing close to departure, with a median of eight days between sighting and flight. The winter sun and ski routes looked different: Lanzarote, Marrakesh and Geneva deals were mostly for flights two to three months out. Prague deals were for departures a median of 105 days ahead. This does not prove when booking is cheapest, because the scanner only records fares flagged as deals. It does show that useful BFS fares turn up both last minute and well ahead.
In the feed on 17 October 2026 there were 18 BFS deals. The cheapest was £41 return to Leeds Bradford on easyJet (2 to 5 November), with £45 to Málaga on Ryanair (13 to 16 December) and £49 to both Lanzarote and Alicante. The median of those 18 was £69.50, and the most expensive was £163 to Hurghada. The median fare sat about 52% below the typical price the provider showed for each route. You can see the current preview on the Belfast International flights page.
Flights to Great Britain: where the airports overlap
This is where the choice gets genuinely close. easyJet flies to Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Gatwick, Luton and Manchester from Belfast City, and it also flies domestic routes from Belfast International. Aer Lingus Regional and British Airways add more choice at BHD.
From BFS, the scanner logged 42 deal observations to six Great Britain airports in the four weeks to 17 October 2026. Glasgow, Liverpool and Newcastle each had a lowest logged return of £33, Leeds Bradford £37, Bristol £38 and Southampton £44. Some of those are thin samples (Bristol was seen once, Newcastle and Liverpool twice), so treat them as proof that fares at that level appear, not as a typical price.
For a short domestic trip, the airport transfer can be a big part of the cost. A slightly higher fare from Belfast City may still work out cheaper once you price the shorter bus ride or taxi. If you are flying to London, also check which London airport you land at; our guide to the cheapest airports to fly from explains why the airport, not just the fare, matters. Departure pages for Gatwick, Luton and Manchester show what is onward from there.
Getting there: the 300 and 600 buses
Translink runs a dedicated airport bus to each airport. The Airport Express 300 links Belfast International with the city centre, and the Airport Express 600 links Belfast City Airport with the city centre. Tickets for both can be bought at Belfast Grand Central Station and from machines at the airport bus stops.
Visit Belfast describes Belfast International as a 30-minute drive from the centre and Belfast City as three miles away. In practice, that difference shows up most on early flights: a 6am departure from BFS means a very early start if you are relying on the bus. Fares and timetables change, and sources disagree on current prices, so check Translink’s journey planner rather than trusting an old figure.
If you are driving, compare parking at both airports for your dates before you book flights. A week of parking can easily cost more than the gap between two fares. If you live in the north or west of Northern Ireland, BFS may simply be closer, and the Belfast City convenience argument disappears.
When Dublin Airport is worth comparing
Dublin Airport has a far bigger network than both Belfast airports combined, including transatlantic flights. It is worth checking when:
- you are flying long-haul and would otherwise connect through London or Amsterdam;
- your destination has no direct flight from BFS or BHD;
- you are travelling on dates when Belfast fares are high, such as school holidays.
The cost is time. Visit Belfast puts the coach journey from Dublin to Belfast at approximately two hours. The Translink and Bus Éireann X1 serves Dublin Airport, and Aircoach’s 705X links Belfast Grand Central with Dublin Airport and Dublin city centre. Add two coach fares, the risk of a delayed coach before an early flight and possibly a hotel. A Dublin fare needs to be meaningfully cheaper to be worth it for a short European trip. For a long-haul family trip the saving can be large enough to justify it.
Blame the Fare does not scan Dublin, so compare it in a normal search tool. If you are weighing longer trips to reach a cheaper airport, our guide to positioning flights covers the risks of separate tickets.
Passports, photo ID and the Common Travel Area
Flights from Belfast to Great Britain are domestic, but that does not mean no ID. Check which photo ID your airline accepts before you go.
Dublin is different, because flights from there to Britain cross an international border inside the Common Travel Area. The UK government’s guidance says British and Irish citizens can move freely between the two countries and do not need a visa or permit to enter the UK. Other nationalities remain subject to immigration rules and should check whether they need a UK visa when travelling from Ireland.
Airlines can set stricter rules than the law. From 25 February 2026, Aer Lingus has required all passengers, including British and Irish citizens, to carry a passport or Irish passport card on flights between Ireland and the UK; other photo ID is no longer accepted. Take your passport if you plan to fly from Dublin, and check the rules for the airline you book.
How to price a trip across BFS, BHD and Dublin
- Decide whether the trip is BFS-only. For a Ryanair or Jet2 destination, Belfast City will not have it. For Great Britain, include both codes.
- Search both airports on the same dates. Use the same passengers, cabin and bags so the fares compare like for like.
- Add the getting-there cost. Bus, taxi or parking, both ways. For Dublin, add the coach and a buffer for delays.
- Price bags at checkout. Low-cost fares often exclude a large cabin bag or hold bag; see our checked bag fee guide.
- Check the airport code on the booking. BFS or BHD, on both legs, before you pay.
- Set an alert for the route you settle on. If the fare is close to your limit, watching it beats re-searching daily.

Watching a Belfast International fare
The free deal feed shows a preview of current deals, including Belfast International when the scanner finds them. Members of The Departures Club see the full feed and can set Watches: an exact route from BFS, outbound and return dates and a maximum return fare. Watches are checked hourly while membership is active, and you get an email when a matching fare appears.
Membership is priced in U.S. dollars: $9 per month or $79 per year. Where available, the founding annual offer is $49 for the first year and then renews at $79 per year. Blame the Fare does not sell tickets: you book with the airline or an agent, and you should confirm the price, airport and bags there. Our deal feed does not cover Belfast City or Dublin, so use another alert tool for those airports. See membership details or the flight price alerts page.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about this topic.
Which Belfast airport is cheaper to fly from?
Neither is cheaper on every route. Belfast International usually has more low fares to sun and European city destinations because Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet run large leisure networks there. Belfast City competes mainly on flights to Great Britain. For a domestic trip, price both airports on the same dates. Then add bags and the journey to each airport before deciding which is cheaper overall.
What is the difference between BFS and BHD?
BFS is the code for Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove, roughly a 30-minute drive from Belfast city centre. BHD is George Best Belfast City Airport, about three miles from the centre beside Belfast Harbour. They are separate airports with different airlines, buses and parking. If a booking says BHD and your car is parked at BFS, you have a problem, so check the code at every step.
Is Belfast City Airport the same as George Best Airport?
Yes. George Best Belfast City Airport is the full name, usually shortened to Belfast City Airport, and its code is BHD. It is not the same as Belfast International, which is also sometimes just called Belfast Airport. Many booking screens simply show Belfast, so read the airport name and the three-letter code before you pay, and again on your boarding pass.
Which airlines fly from Belfast International?
easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 are the main airlines at Belfast International. Ryanair says it has two aircraft based there and flew 15 routes in summer 2026. Jet2holidays lists more than 24 holiday destinations from the airport. In Blame the Fare's deal data from 19 September to 17 October 2026, easyJet appeared on 29 of the 39 BFS routes logged, with Ryanair on eight and Jet2 on seven.
Which airlines fly from Belfast City Airport?
Visit Belfast lists Aer Lingus Regional, British Airways, KLM and easyJet among the airlines at Belfast City Airport. easyJet flies from there to Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester, and is adding London Southend from 25 October 2026. Most Belfast City flying goes to Great Britain, with KLM providing the link to Amsterdam. Schedules change, so check each airline's current timetable.
How do I get from Belfast city centre to each airport?
Translink runs the Airport Express 300 between Belfast Grand Central and Belfast International, and the Airport Express 600 between the city centre and Belfast City Airport. Belfast City is around three miles out, so it is a short trip. Belfast International is roughly a 30-minute drive, longer in traffic. Check current fares and times on Translink before you travel, especially for early departures.
Is it worth flying from Dublin instead of Belfast?
Sometimes. Dublin has far more routes, including long-haul flights, so it is worth checking for destinations that neither Belfast airport serves directly. The Translink and Bus Éireann X1 takes about two hours from Dublin to Belfast, and Aircoach and Dublin Express also run coaches. Add that time, the coach fare and any overnight stay before deciding that a cheaper Dublin fare is really the better deal.
Do I need a passport to fly from Dublin to Britain?
Legally, British and Irish citizens can travel freely within the Common Travel Area. Airlines set their own ID rules, though. Aer Lingus has required a passport or Irish passport card from all passengers on flights between Ireland and the UK since 25 February 2026. Check your airline's current policy before booking. Travellers who are not British or Irish must also check UK visa or ETA rules.
Does Blame the Fare show deals from Belfast City Airport?
No. Blame the Fare's deal scanner currently covers Belfast International (BFS) but not Belfast City (BHD). Every Belfast price in this guide comes from BFS. For Belfast City flights, search the airlines directly or use a comparison tool. You can still use a Belfast International deal as a benchmark when you are pricing a similar trip from Belfast City or from Dublin.
How far ahead were cheap Belfast International deals showing?
It varied a lot by route. In deals logged between 19 September and 17 October 2026, the median gap between seeing a deal and departure was eight days for Paris Beauvais, 58 days for Málaga, 84 days for Geneva and 132 days for Southampton. This data only covers fares flagged as deals, so it does not prove when booking is cheapest. It does show that both short-notice and far-ahead BFS deals appear.
