“Free stopover” is a slogan that hides almost all the useful information. The right question is not whether an airline offers a stopover, but what exactly the program gives you, for which routes, at what cost, and for how many days. A stopover you cannot actually use, or one that is only cheap because the hotel and transport are not included, is not a deal.

This page compares the programs verified on the drafting date of 11 August 2026: Icelandair in Iceland, TAP in Lisbon or Porto, and Turkish Airlines in Istanbul. It does not list every airline’s offer, because a program that cannot be confirmed on its official page is not something this guide will describe. The “no additional airfare” claim is specific and useful: the stopover does not raise the flight cost on eligible fares. It does not make the trip free. A week in Reykjavík has real hotel and meal costs, and the price of those is entirely yours. Treat Icelandair’s offer as a way to avoid a second long-haul ticket, not as a way to avoid paying for where you stay.

Verify the fare type and routing when you book, because the 7-night limit and the 21-night Flex limit depend on the fare you choose. The option appears for qualifying routes and can be placed on the inbound or outbound journey under current terms. TAP also advertises partner offers around the stopover, which are separate from the airfare.

The 10-day ceiling is the headroom, not an average. Whether a long stay is available depends on the route, the dates and the fare. Use TAP’s stopover search to check the exact itinerary and confirm that a 10-day stay is actually offered before you plan it. A shorter stay may be all that a given fare permits.

Turkish Airlines: Istanbul stopover benefits

Turkish Airlines’ Stopover in Istanbul page describes eligible international connections of at least 20 hours and up to seven days. Detailed eligibility applies, and qualifying travelers may receive specified hotel benefits under the program’s terms. The page also describes application timing and route restrictions.

The 72-hour application requirement is a deadline to honor: Turkish’s terms say to apply at least 72 hours before departure. A stopover you add too late may not be processed. Plan the application as part of the trip, before the discount window closes, rather than discovering the deadline after ticketing.

The hotel benefit is eligibility-specific, depending on cabin, fare and the country of the ticket. Do not confuse Stopover with Touristanbul or with operational transit accommodation; each is a separate program with different rules. How the three programs compare

Read the table against the notes. Icelandair’s “no airfare” column is accompanied by “hotel not included”, which is the detail that keeps a trip honest. A program stopover versus a long layover

A program stopover is verified on the airline’s page and priced as part of the fare or a named hotel benefit. A self-built long layover is just a connection you chose, with no special fare treatment, hotel or servicing. The difference is concrete: one has rules you can read and a scope you can price, the other is whatever the ticket happens to allow.

The airline that runs the stopover program is the one that can reissue the ticket and confirm a hotel benefit, and it is the number on the fare you hold. Adding a stopover after ticket issuance is not guaranteed.
